GUEST BLOG Joyce: A Story of Survival by Dr. Matt McLennan

(Editor’s Note: One of the best ways to help chimpanzees is to support great conservationists and their projects. Here is a blog post from spring 2018, written by one of the best - Dr. Matt McLennan, director of the Bulindi Chimpanzee & Community Project.)

I’d like to thank everyone for their kind words and thoughts following the death of Bulindi’s oldest and much-loved chimpanzee, Joyce.  Her untimely death, after she was injured by a farmer’s trap

Lessons Learned from Dr. Jane Goodall

Looks can be deceiving.  The always tactful and elegant Maria Shriver found out first-hand one day when she called Jane Goodall to the podium in 2009 to award her the Women’s Conference Minerva Award.  Intending it as a compliment, Shriver offhandedly remarked that despite her “frail” appearance, Jane was a mighty woman. As Jane took the podium, she said that she was anything but “frail,” and proceeded to prove it by hoisting the heavy award trophy over her head.

Chimpanzees Are Amazing!

Chimpanzees Are Amazing!

Chimps share more than 98% of their DNA with humans, and along with the bonobos, are man’s closest relatives.  We share much in common, including many complex emotions, facial expressions, higher intelligence, the ability to make and use tools, and close family ties.  Though chimpanzees are unable to speak, they have some ability to understand and use language that has been demonstrated by research using sign-language and computers.
