Chimpanzees have allies - organizations that are working around the world on
behalf of chimps and other apes. These organizations span the many aspects of
chimpanzee protection.
The organizations shown below are just a few of the important groups protecting
chimps and great apes. Find information about a host of others by clicking on the
links listed at the right of the screen.

Jane Goodall Institute
This important Institute focuses on chimpanzee
conservation in Africa, captive chimp concerns, planet
sustainability, and advocacy. Their website includes
information about chimps, Dr. Goodall, and her youth
organization Roots & Shoots. Subscribe to the Facebook
page and Twitter for frequent updates on new chimp
developments.
Ape Alliance
The Alliance is an international coalition of organizations and individuals, working for the conservation
and welfare of apes, including chimpanzees. The website links to recent news items on chimpanzees,
and also lists a wealth of other important conservation organizations. Contributions can be made
through the Born Free website. Born Free organizations in both the UK and US support sanctuaries and
advocacy on behalf of chimpanzees. For more information, go to: www.BornFreeUSA.org or
www.BornFreeUK.org.
World Wildlife Federation
The Federation supports conservation of many species and regions, but one of its foci is on protecting
the animals and forests of the Congo Basin (check it out).
Wildlife Conservation Society
The Society's mission is to save wildlife and wild places across the globe. In addition to managing New
York City's zoos and aquarium, it also manages about 500 conservation projects in more than 60
countries. The group has been active in projects to protect great apes in the Congo Basin. Information
on its recent activities for chimp conservation can be found here.
Great Apes Survival Partnership (GRASP)
GRASP is an innovative project of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United
Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) whose mission is to lift the threat of
imminent extinction faced by gorillas (Gorilla beringei, G. gorilla), chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes),
bonobos (Pan paniscus) and orangutans (Pongo abelii, P. pygmaeus) across their ranges in equatorial
Africa and south-east Asia. Its website contains valuable and comprehensive information about
chimpanzees and all of the great apes.
